At Granger Pediatric Dentistry in West Valley City, we offer all types of sedation dentistry for our patients. We may recommend using some form of sedation for our patients for a number of reasons: young age, high amounts of treatment needed, fear or anxiety with dental treatment or medical/special needs patients. If your child experiences stress or anxiety which makes them unable to cooperate for the recommended dental treatment, then sedation dentistry may be for them.
It will help a frightened child feel more comfortable and to have a good experience with their appointment giving them the confidence they’ll need for future dental visits. We offer 4 types of sedation dentistry: nitrous oxide (laughing gas), conscious oral sedation, in-office IV sedation and general anesthesia at Family Surgical Suite or Primary Children’s Medical Center.
Pediatric Sedation Dentistry Options:
- Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas) – This sedation option allows children to breathe nitrous through a small mask that sits over their nose. Nitrous Oxide helps relax the child and makes the appointment a better experience.
- Oral Sedation – This sedation method is administered at our office. After a thorough review of their medical history and verifying their fasting status, your child will be given a small drink of oral sedatives. Once the medicine is given, the child and parent(s) sit in a private room with a TV. The medicine generally takes about 45-60 minutes to take effect. Once the child is relaxed and sleepy we help them back to the treatment room.
- In office IV sedation – Each week we have a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) that comes to our office. Our nurse either starts an IV on your child or gives a small injection, much like the injection given during an immunization, of a sedative. Once the sedative has been given or the IV has been started, our CRNA can then give additional sedation medicines to keep your child relaxed and sleepy. The amount of sedatives given to your child is based on their weight. Our CRNA closely monitors your child’s dosing and only gives the amount of sedation medicine that is necessary to keep your child asleep during the procedure.
- General Anesthesia– This can be performed at either Family Surgical Suite or Primary Children’s Hospital.
Best Pediatric Dental Office in Northern Utah
Many pediatric dental offices have chosen to limit the sedation options they offer, but we feel children’s needs, fears, and medical histories are as diverse as the children we treat. This is why we offer such a wide range of sedation options for our patients. We take our sedation safety extremely seriously. Dr. Cam teaches sedation to the pediatric dental residents at the pediatric dental residency at Primary Children’s Hospital. We also closely follow the guidelines for safety outlined by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and always make safety our number one priority.
